Benefits of Hanuman Chalisa

In keeping with the Hindu tradition of 40-verse prayers dedicated to specific deities, the Hanuman Chalisa is recited as a form of prayer to the Hindu Monkey God, Lord Hanuman.

Lord Hanuman played a pivotal role in the Ramayana which documented the life of Lord Rama. The central part of the narrative of the Ramayana was the battle that Lord Rama waged against the demon king Ravana. Ravana had kidnapped and imprisoned Lord Rama’s wife Sita in his island kingdom of Lanka enticed by her beauty.Drawing of Lord Hanuman

In the consequent search and pursuit of Sita, Lord Rama met Lord Hanuman and sought his help. The latter brought with him not just great hidden powers but also the friendship and support of the army of monkeys – known as the ‘Vaanar Sena‘. Lord Hanuman had a story of his own that caused his paths to cross with that of Lord Rama. He was the son of the God of Wind – Pavan. Lord Hanuman was an incarnation of Lord Shiva who had taken the form of the Monkey God in order to assist Lord Rama who was Himself an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. While Ramayana is a story of the battle between good and evil, it also encapsulates the idea of divine control over our world and how Higher powers take birth among us in order to remind us of our duty in pursuing the path of righteousness and going after our life goals with persistence.

Through every part of the Ramayana, Lord Hanuman personified the ideas of devotion, discipline and focus. He showed through his actions how great power could be exercised with unadulterated innocence. These qualities not only made him the greatest ally that Lord Rama could find, but also one of the most revered figures in Hindu history.

Hindus worship Lord Hanuman not just for his protection and blessings but with the idea that he might give them the many capabilities that made him Lord Rama’s greatest devotee. The Hanuman Chalisa is fundamentally a path to those goals. Hindus believe that regular recital of the Hanuman Chalisa helps you receive those divine gifts from Lord Hanuman himself.

Specifically, the many benefits of Hanuman Chalisa are believed to be –

  1. Develop devotion, disciple, persistence and will-power just like Lord Hanuman displayed these qualities throughout his life. It is key for you to understand the meaning of the Hanuman Chalisa as you recite it in order to be able to maximize the benefits from it.
  2. Connect with the inner powers that lie dormant inside you just like Lord Hanuman rediscovered his various divine powers through his noble act of assisting Lord Rama win a victory over evil powers.
  3. Overcome and eliminate the effects of Sade Sati – the phase of time during which you are put through a life of troubles and problems due to the effect of Shani Dev – the Lord of Justice. Lord Hanuman had rescued Lord Shani from the prisons of Lanka. And because of this any devotee of Lord Hanuman is offered eternal protection from the wrath of Shani Dev.

Through his innocence and purity Lord Hanuman was able to win the friendship of Lord Rama. And by learning those capabilities from him you can also turn every relationship in your life into something highly constructive.
  7. Harness your inner abilities for wisdom and focus. As a child Lord Hanuman was cursed into forgetting about all the powers he possessed. It was only after he met Lord Rama and committed to helping the latter fight evil, was Lord Hanuman able to rediscover the immense powers that lay hidden within his own self. These powers not only made him the strongest ally of Lord Rama but also one of the most revered historical figures in Hinduism.
  8. Receive forgiveness for any wrongdoings and mistakes you have committed. It is only human to make mistakes – intentional or otherwise – from time to time. Lord Hanuman is known to have been kind and empathetic. Singing the Hanuman Chalisa will not only help you receive his forgiveness but also the forgiveness of the Holy Trinity of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva each of whom have a deep connection with Lord Hanuman.
